Broadband VPN breach reinforces need for good security
Business broadband VPN users are being reminded of the importance of adopting security measures such as restricting access to certain IP addresses, keeping the connection behind a firewall and logging all failed log-on attempts after an audacious incident involving a US hacker. Albert Gonzales has pleaded guilty to using VPN connections to target sensitive information at more than 250 companies.

Broadband VPN security under scrutiny over December and January
Companies are being urged to ensure their broadband VPN security remains tight during winter as new evidence suggest time of year plays a part in the vulnerability of networks. Measures which can be taken to safeguard the integrity of managed VPN connections include regular testing, allowing access only from users’ IPs and logging all failed attempts to access the VPN.

Managed VPN will be handled by AT&T for four more years
A managed VPN account tendered by the US Postal Service to connect more than 5000 points of retail has been won again by telecoms provider AT&T. The managed VPN is part of the Postal Advanced Telecommunications Network project and is served via the company’s Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) network. The contract has been renewed at a cost of $120m (£75m) over the next four years.

Broadband VPN security improved to block recreational sites
School broadband VPN connections are being bypassed by pupils using proxy servers, according to new findings. Most schools and workplaces have specific VPN settings to limit the sites that users can visit, but many are using the proxy workaround to get on recreational sites. However, research suggests that VPN security has been tightened in recent years, making it harder to bypass.
